BEVERLY — Police Chief Mark Ray is a finalist for the police chief job in Lone Tree, Colo.
Ray has been selected as one of six finalists out of 90 applicants after a nationwide search, according to a press release from officials in that city. The candidates are scheduled to be interviewed Friday and Saturday.
Ray said yesterday that he could not say much because the selection process is ongoing.
“Clearly, I love the city of Beverly and doing my job,” he said. “I think the Beverly Police Department has come a long way and is very strong. This is an opportunity that presented itself to me.”
This is the second time that Ray has applied for another job. Last year, he was a finalist for the police chief’s job in Portland, Maine.
Mayor Bill Scanlon said he has no problem with Ray seeking other jobs.
“I think Mark feels this would be good for his career, and I never like to stand in the way of people trying to better themselves,” Scanlon said. “It’s part of life. Good people are going to try to better themselves. Mark’s been a good chief.”
Lone Tree, which is about 25 miles south of Denver, was incorporated in 1995 and has a population of 11,000. It is described as one of the state’s fastest-growing and most affluent communities.
The starting pay for the police chief’s job was advertised at between $104,200 and $135,500. Ray’s current salary in Beverly is $127,059.
Ray is the only finalist for the Lone Tree job who is not from Colorado. The other five are all police officers from the metro Denver area.
Ray, 53, has been police chief in Beverly since August 2007. He is a Beverly native who has been with the Police Department for 27 years. He also served with the U.S. Army National Guard in Iraq.
