Danvers man badly injured in crash

PEABODY — Police say a Danvers man who suffered severe injuries after he crashed into a state dump truck on Interstate 95 yesterday morning was pulled out of his vehicle by a civilian just before it burst into flames.

Franco Carullo, 35, was traveling north shortly before 2 a.m. yesterday when he rear-ended a Massachusetts Department of Transportation dump truck, said state police spokesman Trooper Thomas Murphy. The dump truck had been clearing snow from the breakdown lane shortly before Exit 47 at the time of the accident.

Carullo sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was pulled from his 2008 Jeep Wrangler by a “civilian witness,” Murphy said.

It was unclear whether that person was the driver of the dump truck or a passing motorist.

By the time emergency personnel arrived on the scene, the Wrangler was “fully engulfed in flames,” Murphy said.

Carullo was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital, where a representative said last night that he was not listed as a patient in their directory.

The driver of the dump truck was not reported injured.

All lanes of I-95 were briefly closed as firefighters extinguished the blaze. Deputy fire Chief Richard Nelson said Engine 3, Engine 7 and Car 2 responded to the scene and that crews used 1,500 gallons of water to knock the fire down.

The Fire Department received a report of the accident at 1:53 a.m. and was on the scene by 2:05 a.m., he said.
