Mall altercation leads to charge of kidnapping

PEABODY — A Lynn man was arrested on a kidnapping charge yesterday afternoon after an altercation at the Northshore Mall.

Austin Lane, 25, of 181 Hamilton Ave., Apt. 2, Lynn, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, domestic assault and battery, and two counts of witness intimidation.

A woman reported to police at 1:47 p.m. that her friend and her friend’s boyfriend had an altercation near P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and that they’d left the area five minutes before, possibly headed toward Salem.

In Salem, police checked for the suspect at 10 Becket St. at 2:27 p.m. but reported that he wasn’t home. Then, around 3 p.m., Lane was arrested at that location. A woman he was with at the time of his arrest was “extremely uncooperative” and declined police assistance, according to Salem’s log about the incident.

Lt. Richard Callahan said Lane wouldn’t let his girlfriend out of the car during the incident, leading to the kidnapping charge.
