Police: Woman slapped for refusing to steal drugs

SALEM — A Salem woman has been charged with domestic assault and battery after she allegedly slapped her brother’s girlfriend because she refused to use her job at a pharmacy to steal prescription drugs.

Amanda Hadley, 33, of 239 Jefferson Ave. was arrested shortly after 4 p.m. Monday.

Prosecutor Lynsey Legier told a Salem District Court judge that Hadley, who is also currently awaiting trial in a drug case, approached her brother’s significant other in the home they all share.

Hadley demanded that the woman use her access to the pharmacy to steal the prescription drugs Suboxone, a synthetic opiate used to treat heroin addiction, and Klonopin, an anti-anxiety drug, the prosecutor said, citing a Salem police report.

“She said ‘no way,’” Legier said. The two women began to argue, and Hadley slapped the woman, the prosecutor said.

The defendant’s brother heard the argument, he told police. Legier urged Judge Sabita Singh to revoke Hadley’s bail in the drug case for 60 days and add $1,000 bail on the new charge.

Defense lawyer Edward McNaught urged Singh to release Hadley, suggesting that the incident did not cause any significant injury. McNaught also pointed to the fact that though she has a pending case, Hadley has not been convicted of anything during the past three years.

Singh set bail at $300 and rejected the request to revoke bail in the drug case. Hadley was expected to be released yesterday after her parents told McNaught they would be posting her bail.

She’s due back in court April 26.
