Family's injured dog gains Facebook fans

DANVERS — A family's 3-year-old cocker spaniel named Sammy, which was mauled during a walk last month, now has a Facebook page called "Sammy Super Dog" and plenty of well-wishers, owner Kristen Litka said.

The dog was attacked by an unknown dog on the morning of Aug. 15 when Litka's husband, Keith, took the dog for a walk at the Putnamville Reservoir. The dog was attacked the morning of daughter Avari's seventh birthday.

Since then, the Danvers family has been trying to track down the owner of the other dog, but they have also been trying to raise money to offset what could be $6,000 in veterinarian bills.

The dog suffered a deep wound, from the top of its back to its leg, that has not healed because the skin around the wound died after surgery, Kristen Litka said. She has to go to the vet every day to have Sammy's bandages changed.

On Tuesday, the dog will undergo a skin graft to try and heal the wound, Litka said. Otherwise, the dog is feeling fine and an infection has cleared up.

"He's getting around a lot more," Kristen Litka said.

The Litkas' children and their friends are also trying to help raise money for the dog's care. The Litkas' daughter, Madison, 10, and her friends Livi and Abbi Foglietta, along with Avari and others have organized two lemonade stands to raise money for Sammy. The family plans a yard sale at 77 Pickering St. on Labor Day to raise more money for the dog's care.
