PEABODY — A two-hour manhunt for a Peabody man who fled police in Revere ultimately led to an arrest when the man came back to his Essex Lane apartment covered in mud and cuts.
Leroy Frederick, 39, was arrested at 11:31 p.m. Tuesday night and charged with a slew of crimes, including operating to endanger, failure to stop for police, having defective taillights, possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, operating a motor vehicle while his license is revoked as a habitual traffic offender, a red-light violation and speeding. He was also wanted for three outstanding warrants from Dorchester District Court.
At an arraignment yesterday in Chelsea District Court, Frederick pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail on the warrants and held on $10,000 bail for the new charges.
Frederick's escapade through the North Shore began around 9:30 p.m. in Revere, according to police reports, when a state trooper pulled over the white Audi that Frederick was driving. When police asked Frederick to get out of the car, he instead revved the engine and took off onto North Shore Road headed south, losing police in the process.
Later in the night, state police said they again spotted Frederick's Audi on Nancy Road in Peabody, but when they tried to stop him, he bailed out of the car and took off on foot. State police dogs were called into the manhunt, as were numerous other state troopers and Peabody police officers.
Frederick returned to his apartment at 4 Essex Lane at 11:31 p.m., according to the report. Police were waiting for him there and ordered him to the ground. Instead, Frederick began to run away again but gave up after about 20 feet. He was out of breath, covered with mud and had a cut on his hand from climbing a fence, state police said. Frederick was taken to Lahey Clinic North in Peabody to receive treatment for his hand.
Frederick's driver's license was revoked for four years in October 2008 for being a habitual traffic offender.
