Police: Motorcyclist without helmet seriously injured in crash on Route 1 in Peabody

PEABODY — Authorities say a motorcyclist who was riding without a helmet sustained serious head injuries this afternoon when he crashed into a retaining wall just off Route 1 southbound.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m., when a 39-year-old man crashed a Suzuki into a wall between the Cabaret Lounge and the Bedrooms store, a trooper at the Danvers state police barracks said. No other vehicles were involved, but it was unclear how the crash occurred or how fast the operator was going at the time.

The man was taken by ambulance to Kennedy Fields and then transported to Tufts Medical Center in Boston via MedFlight with head trauma. Police declined to identify him, saying they wanted to make sure his family had been alerted first.

State police handled the accident scene while Peabody police secured the landing site for the medical helicopter. The Fire Department’s Engine 7 also responded to the scene of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.
