DANVERS — A Peabody man is being held without bail after police said he tried to strangle his girlfriend yesterday, as they fought over her car in the parking lot of the Days Inn on Endicott Street .
No serious injuries resulted from the incident. The victim was checked out by a Lyons Ambulance crew, and she declined treatment, police Sgt. Robert Bettencourt said.
Police arrested Stephen Goudreau, 27, of 10 Wayne Road, Peabody, shortly after 6:10 a.m. and charged him with attempted murder and domestic assault and battery.
Goudreau pleaded "not guilty" during his arraignment in Salem District Court. Judge Michael Lauranzano ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Feb. 16.
The judge also revoked Gourdreau's bail in a pending larceny case, according to Steve O'Connell, a spokesman for the Essex County district attorney's office.
The victim called police yesterday morning, saying she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, Bettencourt said.
During an argument at the motel, the pair tussled over her 2003 Acura.
"He grabbed her keys from her and told her he was taking the car," Bettencourt said. She got in the car with Goudreau and tried to stop him, and as they struggled, Goudreau put his hands around her throat and tried to strangle her, Bettencourt said.
The victim managed to get out of the car and call for help. When officers arrived, Goudreau had already driven off.
"While we were investigating, he came back and he was arrested," Bettencourt said.
Goudreau was also arrested on two outstanding warrants from other courts, for drug possession and for driving with a suspended license.
