WOBURN — A man charged in the killing of a former Salem State College student in a Harvard dormitory will be in court this week for a pretrial hearing.
Jabrai Jordan Copney was one of three men — all from New York City — charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Justin Cosby in a Harvard dorm in May 2009. Cosby lived a few blocks from the Ivy League campus but was not a Harvard student.
Authorities said Copney and the other men planned to get marijuana and rob Cosby.
Copney's girlfriend, Brittany Smith, who was a student at Harvard at the time of the shooting, is also charged as an accessory after the fact.
Copney is due to appear in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn today for a final pretrial conference.
Cosby started at Salem State in the summer of 2005 but did not enroll in classes during the spring and fall 2006 semesters, according to a college spokesperson. He later re-enrolled but withdrew again about a month before he was killed.
Cosby had been studying business before switching into Salem State's arts and sciences program. He was a member of the school's Multicultural Student Association, involved with the Hispanic Student Association and played intramural basketball.
Cosby graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School before coming to Salem State.
