Injured Ipswich bicyclist is in serious condition

BOXFORD — The man who was hit while riding his b

icycle near the common Monday is in serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Daniel MacAlpine, 54, of Ipswich was hit by a silver Toyota Camry around 5:30 p.m. on Topsfield Road. Town emergency officials said they did not think his injuries were life-threatening.

“He was stable when we loaded him into the MedFlight, but he had severe chest trauma, a collapsed lung, broken shoulder,” said fire Chief Kerry Stickney, who assisted at the scene. Stickney said MacAlpine was conscious at the time.

The driver, a young man from North Andover, told police he was blinded by the setting sun while driving west on Topsfield Road. He turned left onto Main Street and hit MacAlpine, who was riding east on Topsfield Road, with the passenger side of the car. Police have not released the driver’s name.

Police Chief Michael Murphy said the incident is still under investigation, and citations are still a possibility.
