Lang touts public service

---- — Note to readers: Five candidates are on the preliminary election ballot for one available seat representing Ward 1 on the Beverly City Council. The top two vote-getters will advance to the Nov. 5 final election.

BEVERLY — David Lang has spent more than 25 years in public service for the city, most of it behind-the-scenes work.

Now the 63-year-old Fosters Point resident is seeking the more visible position of Ward 1 city councilor.

“Over the years, people have urged me to run for different offices,” he said. “With Maureen (Troubetaris) retired, I thought I would run. I was always hesitant to run against Maureen. She’s a friend of mine.”

Lang, an environmental consultant, has served on the Beverly Conservation Commission for 22 years, the last 16 as chairman. He was also a member of the Wenham Lake Advisory Committee, which helped to establish a watershed district to protect the city’s water supply.

Lang was born in Beverly and grew up on Douglas Avenue in North Beverly. His family moved to Connecticut when his father, who worked at United Shoe, was transferred to another job.

Lang moved back to Beverly after he got married and landed a job with the U.S. Geological Survey in Boston. He eventually started his own company, Ground Water Consultants, which he’s had for 30 years.

Lang is a licensed site professional, assessing and cleaning up hazardous waste sites, and testifies throughout the country at environmental trials.

During his door-to-door campaigning, Lang said, residents expressed concern about property taxes and the condition of the roads and sidewalks.

“The elderly are particularly concerned about sidewalks being in disrepair,” he said. “They have to walk on the streets.”

As a city councilor, Lang said he would advocate for enhancing the walking trails along Bass River and repairing the erosion to the beach at Obear Park.
