Salem to host poetry festival

SALEM — The 2011 Massachusetts Poetry Festival will be held here in the spring.

The two-day festival, which will take place May 13 and 14, is expected to draw a large crowd to the city. More than 1,000 attended the 2009 festival in Lowell, according to MassPoetry, the event organizer.

Salem State University will host the opening Friday events with workshops for high school students and teachers. Workshops will feature several published poets, including Salem State graduate Tom Sexton, the former poet laureate of Alaska.

The second day is open to the public with readings, poetry slams and other events to be held at Old Town Hall, restaurants, churches and other venues across the city.
