SALEM — National Grid will host a public meeting this week on its controversial transmission cable project.
This is the first meeting since the utility released an engineering report that concluded it would be costly to install the high-voltage lines under Salem Harbor and difficult to repair them once installed.
In a change of plans, National Grid also recently decided to run the cables along one route, which would run along Salem Common and connect substations on Canal Street and Fort Avenue.
The meeting will be held Wednesday in the Salem Five community room on the Essex Street pedestrian mall.
Members of National Grid’s project team will be available to answer questions.
A nonbinding question on the project will be on the November ballot.
