Police: Gun found after teen overdoses

SALEM — Police say a woman who was searching her home for drugs after her grandson overdosed on Tuesday evening discovered a sawed-off shotgun in the teenager’s room, leading to his arrest once he was discharged from Salem Hospital.

Brock A. Fleming, 19, of 33 Walter St., was arrested at the hospital yesterday morning on a warrant out of Salem District Court with a charge of possession of a sawed-off shotgun, according to the incident log and an interview with Lt. Scott Englehardt. He was booked at police headquarters and then transported to court for arraignment.

Officers were dispatched to 33 Walter St. shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday after a report of an overdose. It was unclear what Fleming had overdosed on, though it was likely an opiate. Emergency personnel quickly revived him using Narcan, Englehardt said.

After Fleming was hospitalized, his grandmother searched the house for drugs and discovered a sawed-off shotgun in his closet, wrapped in a dog blanket, Englehardt said.

The woman called police back to the address about 9:30 p.m. and turned the weapon over to officers.
