Salem police dog finds heroin, makes first bust

SALEM — A police dog that had just graduated from a narcotics detection school was instrumental in finding heroin inside a First Street man’s apartment during a raid yesterday, police said.

Brandon Delgado-Garza, 30, of 12 First St., Salem, was arrested on a charge of possession of a class A substance with intent to distribute.

Police executed a search warrant, that had been issued out of Salem District Court earlier in the day, at Delgado-Garza’s residence about 1:45 p.m., according to the incident log and an interview with Capt. Thomas Griffin.

Along with officer Tim Salvo, his handler, Turbo helped find approximately 13 grams of heroin hidden inside the bathroom and bedroom of the apartment, Griffin said.

Griffin said the raid was a result of a two- to three-week investigation that began when the department received a tip that Delgado-Garza was dealing heroin out of his apartment.

It was the first drug bust Turbo was involved in since he graduated from the narcotics detection school a week or two earlier, Griffin said.

The investigation into Delgado-Garza was led by Detective Kevin St. Pierre.
