Peabody police: Knife-wielding robber targets convenience stores

PEABODY — Police say a man with a steak knife robbed the Tedeschi store on Main Street yesterday morning — and may have tried to rob the 7-Eleven on Lowell Street just beforehand.

The man showed up at the Tedeschi at 115 Main St. about 12:30 a.m. and showed a steak knife, according to the incident log. He was described as a being white, 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white strings and baggy black sweatpants.

“The black hood was pulled down tightly over his head/facial area, so there is no further facial description,” police wrote.

After taking an undisclosed amount of cash from the clerk, the suspect fled on foot down Holten Street. A K-9 unit with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department searched the area, but the dog was unable to get a scent. State police also responded to the scene.

While police were reviewing security footage of the incident, they determined that a witness to the crime had actually shoplifted cigarettes after the clerk followed the robbery suspect out the front door, said Lt. Arthur Yeo. That person will be summonsed for shoplifting.

Later, about 2 a.m., an officer who was doing a routine business check at the 7-Eleven at 79 Lowell St. was told by staff there that a man fitting the same description had tried to rob them with a knife just before the Tedeschi robbery. The store didn’t report it at the time.

The robbery attempt failed when the clerk said he couldn’t open the cash register, Yeo said.

The two stores are about a half-mile apart.
