Moulton outraises Tierney in 3rd quarter

Tierney still has bigger war chest

Congressional hopeful Seth Moulton raised $100,000 more than incumbent John Tierney this summer, according to campaign finance reports filed this week.

However, Tierney ended the quarter with $561,155 — almost double the amount of Moulton’s cash total. Moulton started the quarter with a zero balance, while Tierney had $376,224.

The reporting period covered the months of July, August and September.

Tierney, now serving his ninth term in Congress, plans to run for re-election in 2014.

Seth Moulton, a Marblehead native, businessman and former Marine, began campaigning throughout the 6th District in July.

Marisa DeFranco, an immigration attorney from Middleton, has also announced she will run against Tierney. However, she did not file a campaign finance report for the third quarter.

DeFranco, Moulton and Tierney will face off in the Democratic primary in September 2014, assuming they all collect enough signatures to get on the ballot.

Republican Richard Tisei ended the third quarter with just under $2,000 in his campaign account. Tisei, a businessman and former state senator from Wakefield, lost to Tierney last fall by less than 1 percentage point.

In a summer interview with the Salem News, Tisei said he’s seriously considering a 2014 run. However, he did not collect any contributions in the third quarter.

Tierney collected just over $250,000 in third-quarter contributions, while Moulton collected $355,541.

Political Action Committees accounted for $5,000 of Moulton’s contributions, while Tierney collected more than $110,000 from PACs and political party committees.

Neither candidate listed any money contributed by them personally or through loans.

Massachusetts’ 6th District contains 39 cities and towns in northeast Massachusetts, stretching from Bedford and North Andover to Gloucester and Amesbury.
