Cahill tops Slate in fundraising

---- — BEVERLY — A flood of contributions in the last two months has widened the fundraising gap in favor of Mike Cahill in the race for mayor.

Cahill’s campaign raised nearly $22,000 in September and October, more than twice as much as his opponent, Wes Slate, according to campaign finance reports filed by the candidates on Monday.

Slate raised $8,818 over the same time period.

Cahill’s fundraising advantage allowed him to outspend Slate by a nearly 2-to-1 margin as of Oct. 19, the last day of the reporting period. Cahill also had more money left in his account ($13,187 to $7,551) heading into the final weeks of the campaign.

Among the largest donors to Cahill’s campaign are members of his own family. His brothers and their families have contributed a total of $2,475.

Cahill is also carrying a $75,825 liability in money he owes himself from his failed campaign for state treasurer in 2002.

Among the top donors to Slate’s campaign are Mayor Bill Scanlon ($500) and Scanlon’s wife, Louise ($325), as well as city councilors Paul Guanci ($250) and Maureen Troubetaris ($100).

Cahill, a former state representative and city councilor, and Slate, the current Ward 2 city councilor, are vying to succeed Scanlon, who is retiring after 18 years in office. The election is Nov. 5.

In the City Council at-large race, council president Paul Guanci led the five-candidate field with $10,632, followed closely by first-time candidate Matt St. Hilaire with $10,530.

Another first-time candidate, Todd Murphy, raised $9,075, followed by incumbent Jason Silva with $7,150 and challenger Todd Rotondo with $800.

The top three vote-getters on Nov. 5 will earn the at-large seats.

In Ward 6, the challengers for City Council and School Committee have raised more than their incumbent opponents.

In the Ward 6 School Committee race, Lorinda Visnick raised $4,194 to School Committee President Maria Decker’s $1,300. In the Ward 6 council race, John Frates raised $1,650 to incumbent Brett Schetzsle’s $1,462.
