Voters oppose National Grid plan

---- — SALEM — Voters want National Grid to install a high-voltage transmission cable under Salem Harbor rather than through neighborhoods and the downtown, according to the results of a nonbinding question on yesterday’s ballot.

However, the message from the vote was anything but clear.

A total of 2,953 voters supported Question 1,favoring the underwater route, but they represented only 44 percent of the total vote.

More voters either opposed the harbor route or didn’t answer the question and turned in blanks.

To confuse matters even more, many of the people who drafted the original ballot question last summer now favor installing the cables along the railroad tracks.

Opposition to National Grid’s plan was strongest in Wards 1 and 2, which would be most affected by the planned construction.
