Bertram Field reopens tonight with ceremony

SALEM — Bertram Field will be reopened with a ceremony before tonight’s football game.

Bertram Field, Salem High School’s football stadium and track, has undergone a $1.9 million renovation this fall. The complex, behind Collins Middle School, has a new artificial turf field, expanded running track, new scoreboard and other upgrades.

The football team will play its first game on the renovated field, against Boston Latin High School, tonight at 7.

Before the game, between 6 and 6:30 p.m., Mayor Kim Driscoll will make remarks, the marching band will perform, there will be a ribbon-cutting, and the public can tour the new field and track.

Bertram Field closed in June. During construction, football, soccer and other fall sports have been played at alternative sites. Tonight is the football team’s first “home” game of the season.

“As are many other Salem High fans, I am very much looking forward to welcoming our student athletes, and other members of our community, onto the new Bertram Field and track” Driscoll said in a press release. “This project demonstrates how our community can truly come together to take care of an important and valued local asset, in order to enhance it and make it the best that it can be.”
