SALEM — A former resident of a Boston Street rooming house, where two men died last fall of apparent drug overdoses, has been charged in connection with one of the deaths.
Salem police obtained an arrest warrant yesterday for Anthony Burney, 36, in connection with the Dec. 4 death of a 40-year-old Lynn man who resided at Hilltop Manor, a lodging house at 179 Boston St.
Burney, also a tenant there at the time of the incident, has been charged with breaking and entering in the daytime with the intent to commit a misdemeanor, malicious destruction of property worth more than $250 and willful obstruction of a police investigation.
He has not been charged with the man's death, police said.
Burney's address and whereabouts are unknown, police said. They believe he is in the Lynn area and have been working with Lynn police to find him.
Police declined to provide details about the investigation.
This is the fourth person charged in connection with deaths at Hilltop Manor, also known as Hilltop Recovery House, a sober house for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts.
The Lynn District Court, which runs a drug court, sent five men on probation to the facility between September and December, according to the Office of the Commissioner of Probation. They stopped sending probationers there following the December death.
Three men have been charged with moving the body of 29-year-old Lynn man who died at Hilltop Manor on Nov. 9. That man was visiting the rooming house and did not live there, according to one of the owners.
The three Salem men facing charges — Raymond Young, 58, of 87 Federal St.; Richard Hollett, 47, of 81/2 Herbert St.; and Joseph Encarnacion, 27, of 179 Boston St. — are due in Salem District Court on March 7.
In the Nov. 9 death, police say the body was moved by truck from the rooming house to Young's home in the McIntire Historic District.
In the most recent case, Detective Jim Page obtained the arrest warrant yesterday in Salem District Court. He said the charges were brought following an investigation by Salem police and state police into the Dec. 4 "unattended death."
The Licensing Board is holding a hearing Monday night on Hilltop Manor.
