Police ID body found in canal

SALEM — Police have identified the Peabody man whose body was founding drifting down the North River canal on Sunday afternoon.

John Marrone, 71, of 20 Central St., was pronounced dead by ambulance personnel after firefighters removed his body from the water near the intersection of Flint and Bridge streets, said Chief Paul Tucker.

The body showed no signs of foul play, and Marrone’s death is not considered suspicious, Tucker said.

Police found Marrone’s identification in his wallet, along with some cash.

It’s unclear where Marrone might have entered the water.
