White House displeased by violence in Bahrain

WASHINGTON — The White House is expressing "strong displeasure" over the attacks against anti-government protesters in Bahrain and is urging leaders of the Persian Gulf kingdom to show restraint in the face of peaceful demonstrations.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says President Barack Obama supports peaceful protesters as Mideast nations deal with a wave of political upheaval. Carney says Obama does not want to dictate a political outcome in Bahrain.

Police in Bahrain fired tear gas and used clubs against demonstrators. Medical officials said four people were killed.

Carney says the government of Bahrain should observe universal rights, including the right of peaceful assembly.
