Peabody, Mass. — George Athanasopoulos, 82, of Peabody, MA, passed away at his home in Patra, Greece on November 18, after a brief battle with cancer.
Beloved husband of the late Christina (DeMakes) Athanasopoulos. Beloved father of Penelope Tountas and her husband, Sotiri, Spiros Athanas and his wife, Joanne, and John Athanasopoulos and his wife, Katherine. Adored Papou of Spiros Athanasopoulos, Christina Tountas, George Athanas, Peter Tountas, Alexander Athanas, Katina Athanas, Tatiana Athanasopoulos, and Alexander Athanasopoulos, and proud great-grandfather of Christina and Spiros Athanasopoulos. He is also survived by a brother, Kostas Athanasopoulos and his wife, Chrysoula, and a sister, Maria Aggeli. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Penelope (Douros) Athanasopoulos.
George was born on February 15, 1931, in the village of Kontovazna, Arkadias, just outside of Tripoli in Greece. While living in Greece, he worked in law enforcement until he immigrated to the United States in 1966. In the United States George was a hard worker, and in later years helped his wife operate Chandler's Ice Cream in Peabody.
George enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 25 at 11 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 South Common Street, Lynn, MA 01902. There will be a brief visitation prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the above named church.
