DANVERS — Dr. David D. Swenson, 76, of Danvers, and Friendship, Maine, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Saint Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. He was the husband of Janice (Bradley) Swenson.
David was born in Bismarck, N.D. the son of the late Hjalmer A. and Alvira (Lemon) Swenson. He graduated from Bismarck High School, Class of 1953. David attended Bismarck Junior College, Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and North Dakota Medical School. He was graduated from Harvard University Medical School. Dr. Swenson served his residency at Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston. David then served his country with Public Health Services in Virginia as the senior assistant surgeon and eventually earned the rank of Captain.
Dr. Swenson worked as a forensic psychiatrist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Essex County. He held this position for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. David served on the board of directors at the YMCA of Danvers. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Danvers and the Holten Royal Arch Chapter. He was a life member of the Aleppo Shriners of Massachusetts. David was also an accomplished Bag Piper.
Survivors, besides his wife, are three daughters, Karen E. Pickell of Topsfield, Gretchen B. Swenson of Naples, Fla., Deborah R. Silva and her husband Sergio of Assonet; a sister: Wanda Casey of Oregon; a brother, James Swenson of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Swenson.
ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours for Dr. Swenson will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, with a funeral service beginning at noon. Burial to follow with Military Honors in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
