Joseph E. Pechinsky, 92

PEABODY — Joseph E. Pechinsky, 92, of Peabody, a retired Peabody firefighter, fencing coach and noted artist, died peacefully Thursday morning, Sept. 22, 2011 at the Radius Health Care Center in Danvers after a long illness.

He was born in Peabody on Dec. 23, 1918, the son of the late Julien and Anastasia (Bylinska) Pechinsky and had resided in Peabody most of his life. He was a graduate of Peabody High School in 1937.

He was first employed in the leather industry working in the tanneries of Peabody and got his inspiration to do his paintings of the Peabody tanneries that are now in the Essex Museum in Salem and the Peabody Historical Society in Peabody.

In 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving five years and was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor Attack on Dec. 7, 1941. He later served in the Pacific theatre campaign prior to his discharge in 1945.

He returned to work in the leather industry and in 1952 , he joined the Peabody Fire Department for 31 years retiring in 1983. During this time, Joe's interest in fencing grew and he started the Tanner City Fencing Club that grew and flourished as he tutored five Olympic champions from the Club. He enjoyed teaching fencing and later was named a national coach for the U.S. Fencing Association and also coached in the Pan American Games and was inducted into the coaching Hall of Fame. Joe also had a love of travel and climbing and climbed the Swiss Alps, Riffelhorn, Matterhorn, Coulvoir, Manta Roza and the Leiterspitze mountains. He had an independent spirit that he could accomplish anything that he set out to do and he used this to encourage his students in fencing. He had been a member of the Salem YMCA and enjoyed doing wrestling and gymnastics there.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Jennie M. and Raymond Maciewicz of Danvers; and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the brother of the late John, Frank, Benjamin and William Pechinsky.

ARRANGEMENTS: A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a funeral Mass in St. John's Church, 16 Church St., Peabody at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Peabody Fireman's Relief Fund, 41 Lowell St., Peabody, MA 01960 in his memory.

    Ervin “Bud” F. Lyon, 76, of Kensington, formerly of Lexington, MA, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at his home surrounded by loving family.

    Bud was born September 13, 1935, in San Antonio, TX, the son of the late Dr. Ervin F. and Beatrice “Betty” (Fiser) Lyon, Jr. He was raised in San Antonio and was a 1953 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. Bud entered Texas A&M University in 1953 where he was a member of the Army ROTC Program and was elected to the Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi scholastic honor societies. In 1954, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Thelma Faye (Yeager) Lyon in San Antonio. Although both were full-time college students and renting an off-campus apartment, the couple not only maintained high academic standards but also managed the Aggieland Inn in College Station, TX.

    Eleanor L. (Simpson) Morin, age 84, loving wife of the late Charles Morin, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage, died Monday morning, February 20, 2012, at the NSMC Salem Hospital. Born in Salem, Mrs. Morin was the daughter of the late Harold and Helen (Cavanaugh) Simpson. She attended Pickering School and Salem High School.

    William E. Weaver Sr., 72, husband of the late Gilda (Cappeleri), passed away at home on Sunday, February 19. Born in Beverly, he was son of the late William and Greta (Olsen) Weaver.

    Bill grew up in Danvers and was a graduate of Holten High School, Class of 1958. Following high school, Bill served in the United States Army. For many years he was employed at Ceramic-to-Metal Seals, INC., in Melrose until his retirement. Prior to working there, he was employed at Omniwave in Gloucester. Bill enjoyed boating, fishing and gardening. He was known for growing some of the best tomatoes around. He was also a handyman, with a talent for refinishing furniture. He will truly be missed.

    Elizabeth A. Markos (formerly Nikas), 54, of Ipswich, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, in her husband's arms. She was born December 10, 1957, and raised on the North Shore, in Ipswich. Mrs. Markos is survived by her husband, Dana and two children, Daniel and Amanda. Throughout her life Mrs. Markos was known for her quiet strength, kindness, and true love of living. Her dedication to her family and friends was unwavering. In 2009 Mrs. Markos was diagnosed with brain cancer. She spent the last three years of her life surrounded by her husband, son, daughter, countless family and friends, and her beloved animals. Her fight was one fought with grace, courage, and hope.

He also attended Boston Music Conservatory for three years. He has lived in Lynn most of his life and the past few years in Peabody.

    Paul R. Grant, 63, of Lufkin Street, husband of Loretta E. (Lander) Grant, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.

    Born May 24, 1948, and raised in Norwalk (Rowayton), Conn., he was the son of the late Wilbur R. and Evelyn (Pack) Grant. As a young man Paul worked for Wrynn's autobody shop in Norwalk, later becoming a police officer working for eight years with the Norwalk Police Dept. Moving to the North Shore in 1976, he went on to co-own and operate the former Gloucester Yankee Marina. He joined the Essex Police Dept. for three years while he also owned and operated Meadow Ridge Farm in Essex. He was most recently employed as a police officer with the Hamilton Police Dept., where he taught firearms safety classes, and during these years Paul went on to earn an undergraduate degree at Springfield College and a masters degree in criminal justice from Western New England College, retiring from Hamilton Police Dept. as a sergeant in 2009 after serving more then thirty-nine years as a police officer.

    She was born in Newton. She had degrees from Wheelock College in Boston, and Central Connecticut State University. She married her husband of almost 60 years in 1952. Jean taught in West Hartford, Conn., for 26 years. She was an active member of the church of St. Helena, West Hartford Belles, life member of several educational associations, and served on the board of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.
