Paul R. Grant, 63, of Lufkin Street, husband of Loretta E. (Lander) Grant, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester.
Born May 24, 1948, and raised in Norwalk (Rowayton), Conn., he was the son of the late Wilbur R. and Evelyn (Pack) Grant. As a young man Paul worked for Wrynn's autobody shop in Norwalk, later becoming a police officer working for eight years with the Norwalk Police Dept. Moving to the North Shore in 1976, he went on to co-own and operate the former Gloucester Yankee Marina. He joined the Essex Police Dept. for three years while he also owned and operated Meadow Ridge Farm in Essex. He was most recently employed as a police officer with the Hamilton Police Dept., where he taught firearms safety classes, and during these years Paul went on to earn an undergraduate degree at Springfield College and a masters degree in criminal justice from Western New England College, retiring from Hamilton Police Dept. as a sergeant in 2009 after serving more then thirty-nine years as a police officer.
Paul was an automobile enthusiast and a builder and driver of dragsters.
In addition to his wife of nine years, he is survived by two sons, Russell Grant and his wife Lynn of Westfield, Mass.; Daniel Grant and his wife Lily of Saco, Maine, three grandchildren, Eric & Amanda Grant of Saco, and Evan Grant of Westfield, Mass., and a brother David Grant of Bucksport, Maine. He was also pre-deceased by a brother, Wilbur R. Grant, Jr. formerly of New Haven , Conn., and two granddaughters, Madelyn & Emma Grant formerly of Westfield.
ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be Thursday 6 to 8 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Family and friends are respectfully welcomed. Interment services will be private.
