Joseph E. Burke


Lynn — Mr. Joseph E. Burke, 92, of Lynn, died on Saturday at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Marie F. “Reia” (Wilson) Burke. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late John and Ella (Mansfield) Burke. He was raised in Lynn and Hamilton, and met his wife while stationed in Philadelphia. He resided in Philadelphia for a period of time, and had lived in Lynn since 1954.

Joseph was a proud Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He achieved the rank of Corporal, prior to his discharge in 1943. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in South Boston, until his retirement 30 years ago. Joseph enjoyed playing cribbage and horseshoes, camping, and golfing with his son. He and his wife enjoyed making dollhouses. His greatest joy came from spending time with his large family.

He is survived by his eight children, Joseph Burke and his wife, Kathy of Chester, N.H., Retta Sharman and her longtime companion, Robert Harris of Peabody, Mary Janice Burke of Lynn, Richard Burke of Salisbury, Terry Marchand and her husband, Dave, of Lynn, Trisha Rennick and her husband, Ed, of Peabody, Suzanne Burke and her fiancé, Mark Marini of Concord, and Laurie Knight and her husband, Brian, of Lynn; his daughter-in-law, Susan Burke of Lynn; 23 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Edward and Kenneth Burke; and brother of the late Arlene, Peg, Cynthia, John, Frances, Richard, and Elizabeth.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Thursday, at 9:30 a.m., from the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway, Route 129, Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lynn, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus.
