Rockport, MA — John L. Hyland, 98, died peacefully at home in Rockport on Friday, December 13, 2013, with his son, Jack, by his side.
He was born June 28, 1915, in Salem, Mass., and was the son of Samuel and Mary Scanlon Hyland. He attended Salem Public Schools, and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged. He worked at General Electric in Lynn, Mass., for over 35 years, before retiring.
In retirement, he very much enjoyed working as a handyman for many friends and relatives in the area. He was an avid reader and loved discussing current events. In the past year, he even read joke books to bone up on jokes to entertain friends and relatives.
John was predeceased by his wife, Jean Hyland; and his beloved sister, Frances Leonard.
He is survived by his son, Jack of Beverly, and his three children, Lyndsey and Brandon Cole of Raleigh, N.C., and David and Daniel, both of Beverly; his daughter, Donna Hanson of Salem, and her four children, Kristian and Susan Hanson, Jess and Kim Hanson, Casey Hanson, and Jaime Hanson, all of Salem; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his former daughter-in-law, Diane Hyland of Rockport.
