Fort Myers, FL — Sonja L. O'Hearn, 96, went home to God on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at her home, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. She was born in Gothenberg, Sweden on March 6, 1917, to Karl E. and Selma K. (Andersson) Lundberg. The family came to America in 1920, and settled in Rockport, MA, where she graduated from Rockport High School, class of 1934, where she was a "jumping center" on the basketball team, and was voted best dancer in her class. She went on to pursue her career as a beautician and graduated from Lorraine Beauty Academy. She resided and worked in Gloucester as a hairdresser for many years.
She was married to Deputy Fire Chief W. Elliot O'Hearn who passed away in 2000. They loved to travel, and enjoyed many wonderful years together. She was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining her family at their home in Beverly. Sonja loved her Swedish heritage. In 2004, she traveled back to Sweden with her daughter and son-in-law to see her birth home and visit with her Swedish relatives.
She was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and used her skills as a seamstress and knitter to outfit them with hand made sweaters, hats, mittens, coats and blankets. She loved Fort Myers, Good Harbor Beach, Rocky Neck, "The "Sound of Music," singing, and her best friend, Betty Williams. She loved to come back to Gloucester each summer and feast on lobster and fried clams and visit with Betty. But most of all, she loved her daughter, Marcia Ellen and her husband, Bob, with whom she resided in Florida for the past 14 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Marcia E. (Collins) Curcuru and her husband, Charles R. (Bobby) Curcuru of Fort Myers, FL; her grandchildren, Laura J. (Curcuru) Crawford of Danvers, Julie A. (Curcuru) Costa and her husband, John, of Danvers, Charles R. Curcuru, Jr. of Beverly, Lisa M. Oliveri of Haverhill, and David S. Curcuru and his wife, Malynda (Jervah) Curcuru, of Danvers; her great-grandchildren, Brandi Oliveri, Emily Crawford, Stephanie Costa, James Oliveri, Jr., Julia Crawford, Caroline Crawford, Matthew Costa, Ashley Curcuru, Jack Curcuru, and a step-great-grandson, Steven Edmonds.
