Beverly Farms, MA — William Alden Smith, Jr. (aka Mario and Billy), 57, passed away on Nov. 24, 2013, from complications with cancer. Billy grew up in Beverly and was a member of BHS Class of ’73. He was also a veteran of the US Marine Corps where he was a high rifle expert. He spent most of his life working as a "storm chasing" roofer, which took him to many areas of the country where he saw and experienced a large panorama of life. He was in New Orleans during Katrina and was trapped for 10 days before being rescued. His boyhood summers were spent swimming and boating off West Beach, fishing and hunting in New Hampshire, as well as snow and water skiing at every chance. He loved scuba diving and once caught a 16 lb lobster single-handed. He was a friend to many and had a heart of gold for any stranger in need. Billy was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Linda Smith, and his brother, Paul Smith Sr. He is survived by a sister, Tina Smith; a son, Joseph Smith; nephews, Paul Smith Jr. and Adam Stranieri; 2 nieces, Natanya Goudreau and Valerie Stranieri, as well as many good friends and their families.
