Elizabeth Bell Hughes

IPSWICH — Elizabeth Bell Hughes passed away on October 19, 2012. She was born to Sylvia (Dinsmoor) Bell and George Andrew Bell of Derry, NH. She was raised in Derry, NH, Kennebunkport, ME, and Daytona Beach, FL, where her parents owned and operated seasonal gift stores. Her home was in Ipswich since 1963.

Betty graduated from Sea Breeze High in Daytona Beach, FL, and was also the fifth generation of her family to attend Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. She also graduated from Chamberlain Fashion and Retailing School and Hickox Secretarial School in Boston. She held positions at Liberty Mutual Insurance, in the research lab at MIT, at the Pentagon, DuPont and for Senator Leverett Saltonstall. In Ipswich and on the North Shore, she was active in many organizations including the Ipswich and Topsfield Congregational Churches, the Topsfield Historical Society, the New Meadows Garden Club, and the Priscilla Capen Herb Society. She also was an active volunteer at the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club Thrift Shop. In her earlier years, she was an active skier, loved to travel and go to Crane Beach. She spent much of her summers residing in Rangeley, Maine.

Betty married Melville Lambert Hughes in October of 1963. They moved to Ipswich immediately after the wedding, and brought up two children. They enjoyed eleven years of love and adventure until his untimely death in May of 1975. Son Thomas lives in Ipswich and son Jonathan resides in Dunstable, MA. Betty is also survived by Jonathan’s spouse Ginger and their three children; Jacob, Delia and Kyla.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service will be held at 10am on Thursday, October 25, in the First Church in Ipswich, Meetinghouse Green. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Committal services will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry, NH. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday 4 to 8 pm in the Whittier-Porter Funeral Home, 6 High Street, Ipswich.
