Sister Katherine Mary Lyons, SND, 78, of Worcester, died peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Long term Care Center in Worcester. Sister’s religious name was Sr. Helen Cornelia, SND.
Sister Katherine was born in Cambridge on May 23, 1933, daughter of the late Cornelius F. and Helen (Cullinane) Lyons. Sr. Katherine entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at Waltham on August 1, 1951 and professed her Perpetual Vows on July 30, 1959.
Sister received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Emmanuel College, her Masters in Administration Supervision from Fordham University, and a Spirituality Program from Creighton University. Her teaching ministries were in New Haven, Conn.; East Boston; Beverly; Peabody; Saratoga, Calif., as Coordinator of Infirmary; Fort Wayne, Ind., in Office of Spiritual Development; Milton, Mass., and Nashua, N.H., as Pastoral Associate; and the Ipswich Sisters Retirement Community.
Sister Katherine is survived by her many Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur family; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Francis and Helen Lyons, John and Ernestine Lyons, Helen and Dan Coughlin, and Paul and Shirley Lyons.
ARRANGEMENTS: Sister Katherine’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by her nephew, Rev. Paul Coughlin, on Monday, April 16, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Our Lady Queen Chapel, 30 Jeffrey’s Neck Road, Ipswich. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Sisters of Notre Dame, Ipswich.
