ROWLEY — Michael J. Shairs Jr., 68, husband of Alice (Reale) Shairs, with whom he shared 47 years of marriage, died peacefully at his home in Kennebunk, Maine on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Born in Salem on Aug. 27, 1942, he was son of the late Michael J. Sr. and Dorothy (Hinkley) Shairs.
Michael grew up in Beverly and is a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1959. While working and raising a family, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lowell Technical Institute in 1970. After graduating, he worked as a draftsman for Sylvania in Salem and later started his own machine company. A skilled draftsman and machinist for the past 41 years, he co-owned and operated Brentwood Machine company in Ipswich.
Michael was a member of the Saint Mary's Cardinals Drum and Bugle Corps in Beverly. He was a dedicated lector at Saint Mary's Parish in Rowley for many years. An avid reader, gardener and traveler, he loved living in Maine and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Michael S. Shairs and his wife Mizuho Arai of Rowley; four daughters, Kerry Shairs of Newbury, Ellen Rudzinski and her husband Jon of Roslindale, Kristina Currier and her husband Zach of Brentwood, N.H., and Katia Shairs of Portland, Maine; his brothers and sisters, George D. Shairs of Kennebunk, John H. Shairs of Danvers, Diane M. Capozzi of Raymond, N.H., Pamela A. Crisafi, and Joseph W. Shairs of Beverly; seven grandchildren, Isabel, Nick, Max, Maya, Mabel, Sadie and Quinn. He was also brother of the late Paul A. Shairs and Charles A. Shairs.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Mary's Parish, 202 Main St., Rowley, on Monday at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly (North Beverly Location) on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Burial in Main Street Cemetery, Rowley.
