Mary J. Serra, 92


Billerica — Mrs. Mary J. (Smyth) Serra, 92, beloved wife of John B. Serra, died Wednesday evening, September 26, 2012, at the Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley in Billerica.

Born and raised in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Julia (Driscoll) Smyth. She graduated from Girl’s High School in Boston where she was a member of their Alumni Association. She was also an active volunteer and life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Billerica.

As a young woman, Mrs. Serra moved to Newton where she had resided until the time of her marriage, moving to Billerica in 1971 where she has since resided. An avid dancer, Mary and her husband enjoyed dancing at weekly and monthly dances throughout the North Shore.

Mrs. Serra had been employed for many years as a head clerk at the Water Department for the City of Newton until the time of her retirement.

In addition to her husband, with whom she shared forty one years of marriage, she is survived by two sisters-in-law, Maria R. Bonaiuto of Beverly and Margie Eggleston and her husband, Jerry of Danvers as well as several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly, Monday, October 1, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell — Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly location) Sunday, from 1 to 3 p.m. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.
