Alfred T. Washburn, 86

Beverly — Alfred Thomas Washburn, 86, died on Friday, January 31, 2014, in the Beverly Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Elaine I. (Mitchell) Washburn, who died on June 13, 2012.

Born in Princeton, Maine, on August 17, 1927, he was the son of the late Alfred H. and Cora (James) Washburn. He was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1946. He had resided in Bangor for many years before moving to Beverly in 1955. A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, before his honorable discharge in May 1949. Prior to leaving the military, he married his sweetheart for life, his beloved Elaine Mitchell of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Alfred worked his entire life in the shoe machinery business, ending up at the United Shoe Machinery Corp. in Beverly for 35 years, before his retirement in 1990.

Alfred’s passing leaves sadness, sorrow and happy memories to those who survived him. He is survived by his two sons, Richard and his wife, Donna Washburn of Lakeville, Maine, and James Washburn and his companion, Cheryl Jacobs of Peabody; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Washburn and her husband, Sean Fitzpatrick, Gregory Washburn, Nicole Polson and her husband, Nick, Christopher Washburn, Meagan Washburn and her fiancé, Patrick Serra, Tommy Washburn and Sean Campbell; three great-grandchildren, River Washburn, and Owen and Brayden Polson; a brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Richard and Francis Mitchell, and Jackie Hanf; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alfred was affectionately known to all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Umpa.” He enjoyed traveling on several occasions to Texas with his loving daughter-in-law, Laurie Peloquin, to visit his great-grandchildren. “Umpa” will be missed dearly, but his legacy left to all of his family is the happiness he gave to all.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot Street, Beverly, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Flying was his passion, always owning a plane, treating it as one of his best friends. He was a member of the Octogenarian Flying Group and flew professional photography flights with his friend, Rigo Guerrero, until 2013. He joined Cessna Aircraft as international sales representative and years later worked for Aero Commander, Piper Aircraft and Fairchild as an International Marketing Director. His duties took him around the world, piloting all over Mexico, Central and South America, Africa and Western Europe. His work also took him to India, Japan and China. In addition to his passion for flying, he was an avid sportsman and excelled in boating, motorcycling, fishing, hunting, swimming and skiing; but his love for his family and friends is what truly distinguished the life of this good man.

  • Phyllis L. Campbell, 101

Wenham — Phyllis L. (Pickard) Campbell, beloved wife, mother and mother-in-law, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 27, 2014, two days after her 101st birthday. Born in Ipswich, she was the younger daughter of Hallett D. Pickard and Clara N. Spencer. She graduated from Manning High School in Ipswich, and was the last living member of the Class of 1930. She attended a two-year business program at what is now Salem State University, known at the time as Salem Normal School. She worked for the Hayward Hosiery Co. as a bookkeeper, until her marriage in 1940 to Wendell H. Campbell. After moving to the shores of Wenham Lake, she shared 48 happy years of marriage with Wendell as a stay-at-home mother. She was a perennial volunteer for the Wenham Village Improvement Society and served as its assistant treasurer for 43 years. Phyllis was an accomplished crafter in the art of crewel and a master knitter, making over 600 hats for friends and homeless shelters in New Hampshire. She was an avid gardener, and loved sharing extra vegetable crops with friends. Seeing Phyllis pushing a mower, or hoeing the rows was not unusual. Phyllis and Wendell divided their time between Wenham and their New Hampshire house. Even at 100 years of age, she would drive to New Hampshire to tend the gardens, or shovel snow off the roof. Phyllis was a graceful skier, winning a senior race in Canada at age 91, and continuing to ski into her 99th year. When she wasn’t skiing, she and her sister, Barbara, spent many of their winters camping in the Virgin Islands. She loved people and opening her home to friends. A devoted member of her church, she is remembered by so many as generous, gregarious, funny, and a warmhearted friend to all. Phyllis believed that hard work was its own reward and boredom was not in her vocabulary.
