Danvers — Evelyn M. (Newman) Tufts, 87, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2013, at the Cedar Glen Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Danvers after a several-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the wife of the late, Aaron P. Tufts, who died in 1989.
Born in Gloucester on February 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late, Louis D. and Dora (Moynihan) Newman. The family then moved to Salem, where Evelyn lived until her marriage in 1948. She was educated in the Salem School systems.
Throughout her life, Evelyn worked many jobs. Her first job was in Danvers at Hotwatt, working mother’s hours. She retired in 1997 at the age of 72 from Adhesive Packaging in Peabody.
In 1948, Evelyn married Aaron Tufts and had two children, Sharon Tufts of Danvers and Aaron Tufts of Portland, Maine. Evelyn enjoyed summers in Southern Maine, sewing and crocheting. She especially enjoyed square dancing. She and her husband were members of the Riverside Squares in Danvers and were past presidents of the former Fair Town Squares in Topsfield.
Evelyn’s family would like to thank the outstanding staff at Cedar Glen Nursing home for the excellent care that was given to their mother. They treated her with dignity and like a family member.
In addition to her children, Sharon and Aaron, she is survived by a sister, Ruth A. Pelletier of Beverly and many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her siblings, Richard and Lester Newman, Bertha Haggerty, Nellie Lewalski and Mary Ruest; a sister-in-law, Katherine Tufts-Hansen; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Tufts.
ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Friday, January 25, in St. Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Visiting hours are Thursday, from 4-7 p.m. at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers.
