NAPLES, Fla. and OSTERVILLE, Mass. — Joseph J. Sousa Sr., 83, beloved husband of Lorraine (Liberge) Sousa, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, died Sunday, February 3, at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a brief illness. Born in Peabody, he is the son of the late Jerome and Mary (Thomas) Sousa.
Joseph grew up in Peabody and later moved to Beverly where he graduated from Beverly High School. As a young boy he worked for his father at JR Sousa and Sons. 30 years later with his brother, Jerome, they took over the family business. In 1986 they sold the company and Joseph started his own commercial real estate company. He enjoyed spending summers in Osterville, Mass., and winters in Naples, Fla. Joe loved boating and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son Joseph J. Sousa Jr. and his wife Carole E. Musgrave of Marco Island, Fla.; two daughters, Dale A. Barry and her husband Timothy M. of Wenham and Lisa M. Toomey and her husband Francis J. of Wenham; one brother Jerome Sousa and his wife Theresa of Rye, N.H.; one sister Natalie Campbell of Beverly; six grandchildren, Joseph J. Sousa III, Matthew Ryan Sousa, Kelly Barry Wolfe, Meghan Kathleen Barry, Caitlin Marie Toomey and Christina Marie Toomey; and three great-grandchildren, Emily, Kayla and Ewan Sousa. He is preceded in death by his brother.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin Street, Peabody, on Saturday at 12 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly (North Beverly Location) on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
