Ellen M. (Gardner) Mitchell


Wilmington — Ellen M. (Gardner) Mitchell, 67, of Wilmington, passed away at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 after a long illness.

Ellen was born in Boston, on June 6, 1945, daughter of Frederic C. “Fred” Gardner Sr., and the late Marie E. (Murphy) Gardner. She was raised in Peabody and graduated from St. James Girls High School, class of 1964. Prior to moving to Wilmington in 1974, Ellen resided in Peabody and Danvers.

Ellen worked in the food service industry for many years before retiring several years ago. She was a loving mother who devoted her life to creating a home for her family, and always coming up with new and different craft ideas to share with family and friends. Ellen was an active member and always willing to help at church activities at St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Wilmington.

In addition to her father, Fred, of Peabody, Ellen leaves behind her loving family; a daughter, Helene Mitchell of New York City; a son, Christopher Mitchell of Wilmington; a brother, Frederic C. Gardner Jr. and Joanne Gardner of Byfield; five sisters and their spouses, Anne Gardner of Lynn, Margaret and John Sonia of Stratham, N.H., Kathleen Cobble, Claire Tomas both of Peabody, and Leann and Chet Shea of Leicester; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Helen Mitchell of Peabody, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 12, at 8:45 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Monday, February 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. “Ellen had an enormous gift of giving to others and will be greatly missed."
