Gloucester, MA — Maria C. Gaipo, 94, wife of the late Manuel T. Gaipo, Jr., died peacefully on Monday, March 24, 2014, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness. Maria was born on March 18, 1920, on the Island of Faial, Azores. She was the daughter of the late Maria Carmelinda Quaresma and Flaminio daSilva.
Maria, along with her family, immigrated to the United States in 1961 and settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Maria was always a hard worker, spending many years working at Mighty Mac and Gorton’s, where she met many new people who helped her learn to speak English. Maria was a member of the D.E.S. Portuguese Club of Gloucester, where she enjoyed the many festivities held there.
Maria always had a talent for creating beauty. She enjoyed sewing and often made her own clothes. Maria loved to crochet; she would create beautiful bedspreads, tablecloths, and other decor for her family and showed much pride when she talked about her work. Saturday was always her favorite day, as she was a yard sale connoisseur, finding many treasures for "only a dollar." When Maria could no longer drive herself, she enlisted the help of her brother, Tony, and together many adventures were had and hilarity ensued. In her later years, Maria enjoyed catching up on her "stories" and spending her time with her many great-grandchildren.
Maria is survived by her sons, Manuel (Manny) Gaipo and his wife, Gerry, of Gloucester, Louie Gaipo of Gloucester; her daughter, Maria (Gaipo) Bernazzani and her husband, Louis Bernazzani, of Danvers. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Michael Gaipo and wife, Amy, Michelle (Gaipo) Cavanaugh and husband, Ralph, of Gloucester, Shaun Gaipo of Brookline, Susan Chalifour of Peabody, Louie Gaipo Jr. and Mary Gaipo of Texas, Christopher Gaipo and his wife, Sothy, of Tyngsboro, Jonathan Gaipo of Gloucester, Chamee (Gaipo) Walker and husband, Chance Sr., of San Diego, California, Elizabeth Bernazzani of Beverly, and Linda Bernazzani of Wakefield. She leaves her most precious great-grandchildren, Caroline, Alex, Ava, Marcus, Brett, Julia, Dylan, Logan, Olivia, Riley, Candelyne, Chloe and Chance Jr.; a sister, Belmira Sousa, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; along with many nieces and nephews.
