Peabody — Mr. Blaine Edward Tufts, aged 84 years, of Peabody, died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a six-month illness. He was married for 55 years to the late Carolyn Jean (Spofford) Tufts. He was born in Swampscott, the son of the late George and Louise (Thomas) Tufts. He was raised in Lynn. In 1982 he returned to school and received a GED from Peabody Adult Education and went on to receive a Bachelors of Science degree in 1991 from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
Mr. Tufts had an extensive military career, first serving in 1944 with the Massachusetts State Guard before enlisting in the United States Navy. Mr. Tufts enlisted in the Navy and was a “Tin Can" Sailor and went on to serve in the Seabees MCB 12 and was a “Plank Owner" symbolizing an original unit member. In his active career he served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He spent 20 years in the active military and retired in 1988 from the US Naval Reserve as a Senior Chief Utilitiesman. From 1944 to 1988 Mr. Tufts served his country.
Mr. Tufts worked for the General Electric Company in Lynn as a manager for many years and retired in 1988. After retirement he worked for many years as a substance abuse counselor for the Center for Addictive Behavior in Shetland Park in Salem.
Mr. Tufts was a friend of Bill W. and associated with the Peabody Triad. Mr. Tufts was active throughout his life spending his time dancing, bike riding, motorcycle riding, and in later years painting and enjoyed taking pictures. He was an avid reader. He had a thirst for life, and lived it on his terms, and left it on his terms.
Mr. Tufts is survived by his two sons Dexter Tufts of Manchester, NH, Mark Tufts and his wife Darlene of Marblehead, a daughter, Susan Loring of Provo, Utah, seven grandchildren, Michael, Benjamin, Timothy, Christopher, Larisa, Shari, and Sean. He leaves many great-grandchildren. He leaves his companion Jan Stoffregen of Peabody and his sister-in-law, Margie Mulready of Somerset, Massachusetts. He is the brother of the late Dexter Tufts.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at 9 AM in the Solimine, Landergan and Richardson Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rte 129), Lynn.
