Peabody — Elizabeth “Liz” Murphy, age 72, of Peabody, a lifelong learner and longtime educator, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 23, 2013, at North Shore Medical Center, Lynn.
Born in Salem, the daughter of the Late Edward and Kaliope “Kay” (Geronimos) Murphy, she attended Salem Public Schools. Liz competed her Bachelor’s Degree at University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Wesleyan, Middletown, CT and continued her love of learning at Harvard University, Salem State University as well as the University of Birmingham, England.
Liz began her teaching career in local schools but the love of travel and adventure drew her to Athens, Greece where she established the international recruiting program for the American College of Greece. After several years of teaching and traveling abroad Liz returned to the North Shore and began a new career as a travel consultant and tour organizer with Aladdin Travel. Her love of teaching called her back to the classroom first at Salem State University and then later at Marian Court College where she established the Travel & Tourism/Hospitality degree program.
More recently she had found a new outlet in education as a Docent for the Stone Zoo where she could combine her love of travel, animals and education with coworkers and guest of the zoo alike.
When time allowed she would volunteer at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem. One of her favorite pastimes was organizing and guiding international tours for a variety of different groups.
She is survived by her first cousins, Diana Gerjoy Botkin and her husband, Daniel, of New York City; her son, Benjamin Gerjoy Perez and his son, Julian; Michael Sosnowski and his wife, Patricia, of Salem and their four children, Michael and his daughter, Alexandra, Tanya Sosnowski Fusco, Jodi Ross and her husband, Joe, and their daughter, Mayri and Bill Sosnowski as well as many dear friends and colleagues both here and around the world.
