Elinor Mary (Desmond) Connolly, 98

Salem — It is with sad hearts and loving memories that the family of Elinor M. Connolly, of Salem, announces her passing on January 17, 2014, at home. She was 98 years old.

The widow of the late Dr. James E. Connolly, Mrs. Connolly was born in Peabody to the late Daniel F. and Josephine A. Desmond. She was a graduate of Peabody High School and employed by Poor’s Leather Factor in Peabody. Following her marriage, she was a resident of Salem for 72 years. She was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the Osgood Park Neighborhood Association and the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead.

A devoted wife, generous mother and cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Connolly devoted her life to creating a warm and welcoming home for her family and friends. Her greatest joy was family gatherings and holiday celebrations surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grands.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Connolly was predeceased by brothers, William, John and Robert Desmond and sisters, Eileen O’Callahan Annis and Dorothy Nelson. Additionally, brothers-in-law, Dr. Richard F. Connolly and Rev. William A. Connolly S.J. and sisters-in-law, Marie Connolly Faircloth and Sister Catherine William, SND. Mrs. Connolly was the last of the family’s greatest generation.

She is survived by daughters, Carol A. Farley (Charles) of Wallingford, CT and Patricia Connolly-Atkins (Frederick) of Marblehead. She will be sadly missed by grandsons, Daniel, Matthew and Brendan Farley and granddaughters, Sydney Atkins Mason (Peter) and Morgan Atkins; her five great-grandchildren, Grace, Katherine, Kiera, Liam and Wren Farley and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful team of devoted caregivers who assisted Mrs. Connolly during the later years of her life. The love and dignity extended to her were a reflection of Mrs. Connolly’s lifetime of caring and devotion to others.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem.
