York, ME — Mr. Charles E. Craven, Jr., 87, formerly of Lynn, Mass., died on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Sentry Hill at York Harbor, Maine, where he had lived since 2010. He was the husband of the late Mary J. (Green) Craven, who he married on May 3, 1952, at St. Pius V Church, Lynn.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Ruth A. (Boileau) Craven, Sr. A lifelong resident of Lynn, he graduated from Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1944. He later attended Northeastern University.
He first served with the Mass. State Guard from 1943 to 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and received the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Japan Medal. After the war he served with the USAF Reserves for three years.
A planning man, Charles worked at the G. E. River Works Plant in Lynn for 42 years and retired in 1986. For 18 years he was a member of the Board of Administrators of the General Electric Employees Good Neighbor Fund. He served as its chairman for 10 years and as secretary for 5 years. He was a member of Local 149, International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO. He served as Steward, Chief Steward and Financial Secretary. After retirement, he served as Administrative Assistant for the Local. He was also a member of the G.E. Old Timers Group and the G.E. Downeast Retirees Association.
After retirement, Charlie enjoyed working part-time at the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, Lynn.
He was a communicant of St. Pius V Church, Lynn; member of the former Capt. William G. Shoemaker Post 345, American Legion, Lynn; member of the Board of Directors of Chapter 3427, AARP, Lynn; member of the Lynn YMCA Retirees Mens & Womens Club; and member of the Limerick Lakes Association, Limerick, Maine.
He leaves several cousins, including Joseph Dupuis and his wife, Andrea, Marguerite Burgess and William McCarthy, all of Lynn, and Mary Louise (McCarthy) Wright of Berwick, Maine.
ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, 4 Barrell Lane, York, Maine. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, followed by a graveside service in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lynn at 12:30 p.m. Donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
