Danvers — Eleutherios “Pappy” Papamechail, 96, peacefully passed away, surrounded by his family, in the Kaplan Family House, on April 12, 2014. He was the loving husband of the late Ruth (Cardas) (Abbott) Papamechail.
Born in Salem on March 21, 1918, he was the son of the late Nilos and Panagiota (Kleros) Papamechail. He was raised and educated in Salem and Danvers, and graduated from Holten High School, Class of 1936. He served our country with the U.S. Army during WWII and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was the proprietor of Pappy’s Shell Gas and Service Station in Peabody, and Pappy’s Town Line Citgo Station in Hamilton. He was a 33rd Degree Mason with the Liberty Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Beverly, an Aleppo Shriner in Wilmington, and a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Salem. Pappy had been very active and a long-time member of the Church in the Cove in Beverly. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.
He is survived by his stepson and daughter-in-law, Craig and Kaoru Abbott of Las Vegas; two step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren; his loving companion, Catherine “Jackie” Neary of Danvers; his sister, Anna Federico of Danvers; his nephews and caretakers, George and Michael Papamechail; and niece, Mary Ann Gamble; his cousin, Kay Marcus; and many loving nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings, Constantine and George Papamechail, and Vasilea P. Varoutsos.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be celebrated at 10 a.m., on Thursday, April 17, in Church in the Cove, 167 Hale St., Beverly. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Visiting hours are on Wednesday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers.
