Peabody — Mrs. Phyllis M. Atkinson, age 93 years, of Peabody, died Wednesday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. She was the wife of the late William H. Atkinson, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late William and Susan (Oldfield) Donovan. She attended Lynn schools, and graduated from Lynn English, Class of 1938, and Chandler Secretarial School in Boston, Class of 1940. She was employed at TW Rogers in Lynn for 18 years and at Brooksby Farms in Peabody for 19 years until she retired in 2006.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Peabody, a 66-year member and Past Woman’s Commander of the Capt. William Shoemaker Post #345. Phyllis was a volunteer at the Chelsea Soldiers Home, and she also made poppies for veterans. She enjoyed walking, word puzzles, and volunteering for local politicians. She received numerous awards for all of her volunteer services, for veterans organizations. Phyllis was known as a “Sweetheart” by all who met her.
She is survived by two sons, Arthur W. Atkinson of Beverly, Alan D. and his wife, Marcia Atkinson of Peabody; one sister, Madeline Frier of Lynn; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
