Shirley Atherton, 83


Peabody, MA — Mrs. Shirley I. (Appleby) Atherton, 83, of Peabody, died on Monday at Beverly Hospital, after a brief illness. She was the wife of Maurice “Moe” Atherton, with whom she had shared 64 years of marriage. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gladys Appleby. She was raised in Lynn, and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, Class of 1948. She had lived in Peabody since 1966.

A homemaker, Shirley enjoyed gardening and reading. She also enjoyed spending time in Salisbury, Mass., in the summer.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Wayne Atherton and his wife, Janice, of Kittery, Maine, Charles Atherton and his wife, Kristin, of South Boston, and Scott Atherton and his wife, Jean of Rowley; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Tremblay and her husband, Phil, of Swampscott; one brother, Charles Appleby and his wife, Helen, of California; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Harry Appleby.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 4 p.m., in the Solimine Funeral Home, 426 Broadway, Route 129, Lynn. Rev. Jane Gould, Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, will officiate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m., prior to the funeral.
