Sarasota, Fl — Gerard Daniel Thomas Eggleston, 85, passed from this life, surrounded by his family, on Monday, April 28, 2014, in Sarasota, Fla., where he had resided during the winter seasons. He died of complications from lung cancer.
Gerard was born in Lynn, Mass. He was the youngest son of Catherine (McSheffrey) and Joseph Thomas Eggleston. He graduated from Danvers High School in 1948, where he was quarterback for the football team. From 1948 to 1952, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman. He became engaged to Margherita Serra of Beverly, Mass., on April 3, 1954, and the two were married on September 12, 1954.
Gerard graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1957, with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering National Honor Society. He worked for many years at Dynisco, in Dedham, Mass., as a mechanical engineer, chief engineer and then as president of the company. Later, he was the founder and president of Industrial Sensors, Inc. in Wilmington, Mass. He has a U.S. patent for his invention of a pressure transducer for the manufacturing of thermoplastics.
Gerard resided in Danvers for most of his long life. He was a parishioner at Saint Richard's Catholic Church, where he and his wife were active in the Mr. and Mrs. Club. Always a sailor at heart, he joined the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly, and enjoyed his sailboat, the "Margherita." He was a terrific harmonica player, and loved music. In recent years, he was active in planning reunions for Danvers High School.
Gerard is preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Sister Anna Martina Eggleston and Margaret Eggleston; his brothers, Father William Eggleston and Joseph Lincoln Eggleston; and an infant daughter, Elizabeth Geraldine. He is survived by his loving wife, Margherita; his children and their spouses, Sharon (Turcotte) Sealana and her husband, Sam, of Lake Tahoe, Calif., Theresa Smith and her husband, Steve, of North Carolina, and William Eggleston and his wife, Kimberly, of Billerica, Mass.; his grandchildren, Gregory Turcotte and his wife, Amy, Sean Smith, Quinton Smith and his wife, Rebecca, Zachary Smith, Gabriella Smith, Daniel Eggleston, and Michael Eggleston; and one great-grandchild, Micah Turcotte.
ARRANGEMENTS: His memorial Mass is scheduled for Monday, May 12, at 10 a.m., at Saint Richard's Catholic Church, 99 Forest Street, Danvers, followed by a luncheon and celebration of his life at Danversport Yacht Club, 161 Elliott Street, Danvers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
