Herbert G. Ryan, 91

HAMILTON — Herbert G. Ryan of Hamilton, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 13. He was 91 years young. He was the loving husband of Virginia "Ginny" (Hardman) Ryan for over 55 years, until she passed in 2000. Loving father of Patricia (Ryan) Leavitt and her husband, Robert, of Morrisonville, N.Y., and Peter Ryan of Hamilton and his partner, Sherry Ranta, of Newburyport, Shirley Leri-Ryan and her partner, Mark Kelly, of Beverly. Cherished grandfather of Kimberly (Ryan) Blyth and her husband, Darren, of Beverly, Lindsay Ryan and her partner, Nate Haines, of Beverly, Brittany Ryan of Boston, Kelly (Leavitt) Brownell and her husband, Eric, of Fisher, Ind., and Kristen (Leavitt) Ovall of Charlotte, N.C. Great-grandfather to five. Brother to sister, Barbara (Ryan) Parisi of Everett. Uncle to Mark, Tommy, David and Chris and all their spouses and children. Herb was a graduate of Northeastern U., and due to poor eyesight, he fought the war wiring battleships in the Fore River Shipyard during WWII. While at NU, he entered a science fair for electrical design and won for his project with a new idea called RADAR. Unfortunately, the Army took possession of the project. It seems they were working on the same thing secretly. Herb went on to a career in engineering and design that included many adventures and products. In the 1950s, he helped design and construct Argentina's first TV Network. This involved many flying miles and in 1958, became one of the first 100K mile members with United Airlines. Over the next few decades he amassed Million Mile Club status with several airlines. His love of flying continued throughout his life and never missed a chance to got out to lunch with his buddies from Beverly to Martha's Vineyard or North. His second love was the ocean, where he eventually became the Highest and Longest ranked member of the U.S. Power Squadron to which he received Governing Board Emeritus Status. As an amateur radio operator, he was an active HAM for over fifty years. Finally, as a trained Electrical/RF Designer, Herb had the opportunity to develop and design many products including, the first Black Cathode Ray Television Tube (Color), the prototype design for the UPC Pricing code, a Reverse Osmosis Machine for third world countries, the first LED gas pump display and finally in retirement he designed the Electronic Toll Taking Device, FASTPASS. During his active life he always had time and gentle love for all who knew him and he was a person that has left a wonderful mark on life on earth. He will be missed.

Salem, MA — Paulette “Polly” (Demitropoulos) Langone, age 74, of Salem, formerly of Lynn, died after a brief illness on Monday, July 7, 2014, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was the wife of LTC Michael S. Langone (Retired), and the daughter of the late William and Leona (Myers) Demitropoulos. Born in Lynn, Mass. on Nov. 19, 1939, Paulette was raised in the Brickyard section of Lynn and graduated in 1957 from Lynn Classical High School, and from UMASS- Amherst in 1961. She moved to Salem in 1965, where she made a home for her family. She was a gifted portrait artist working in several mediums including, pastels, oils, charcoal and watercolors. Paulette worked for the Lynn Public Schools for more than 40 years as an art teacher, first at Breed Middle School, and later at Lynn Classical High School. Many of her students’ artwork was featured in the prestigious Boston Globe Art Contest. She inspired and changed the lives of countless numbers of students. In 1985, she and a colleague were applicants for the Teacher in Space program. After the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, their grief inspired them to create a portrait of Christa McAuliffe and the space shuttle. Proceeds from the sale of posters based on this drawing funded a Christa McAuliffe Scholarship Fund they established for many years. The pair were invited to the White House to meet President Ronald Reagan for their efforts. The original piece of artwork hangs in Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater, Mass. Christa’s Alma Mater. Paulette also attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. for a program especially for teachers. She enjoyed working in floral design, and in her earlier days worked for Tony the Florist in Lynn. She kept herself very busy after retirement. She was a founding member of the North Shore Ladies Investment Club, a former board member of Raw Art Works of Lynn and a member of the North Shore Art Teachers Association. She was active with her husband Michael in his involvement in veterans’ organizations, including the Second Corps of Cadets Veterans Association, and the Yankee Division Veterans Association, where she was recently appointed Sergeant-at-Arms. Before her death, Paulette was in the process of restoring century-old sculptures cast by Italian-American artist Pietro Carproni. The sculptures were a gift from the Classical High School Class of 1911, and will be permanently hung in the foyer of the new Classical High School. Besides her husband, Michael of 50 years, Paulette is survived by her two daughters, Lisa Langone of Salem and her son-in-law, Atty. Joseph P.
