Hilda G. (Joyce) O'Flynn, 99


Ipswich — Hilda G. (Joyce) O’Flynn, 99, of Ipswich, Mass., formerly of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully July 19, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Hugh F. O’Flynn.

Born in Salem, Mass., on March 13, 1914, daughter of the late Albert and Teresa (Whelton) Joyce, she graduated from Salem, Mass., schools. She received a Bachelor's degree in Education from Salem State Teachers College in 1935 and an Master's degree in Education from Boston University in 1936.

She was a guide at the Pierce-Nichols House in Salem in her youth. Before her marriage, she taught junior high school in Millis, Mass., and coached the varsity girl’s basketball team.

During the 53 years, she lived in Portland with her family she was active in the community. She was a member of the PTA at Longfellow School, Lincoln Middle School and Deering High School. She was an active board member of the Womens’ Literary Union, the Longfellow Garden Club, and a Religious Education teacher and member of both the Womens’ Sodality and RENEW group at St. Joseph’s Church. Hilda, along with her husband, Hugh, were early participants in the adult travel learning experience, Elder Hostel (Road Scholar), and enjoyed the program with her daughters over the years.

She moved from Portland to Ipswich, Mass., in 2003 to be closer to the majority of her children. There she was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish. She was also featured in the recent Ipswich oral history video project, "Voices of Ipswich." She attended countless college and high school sporting events, plays, concerts, and other activities involving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the Deering Rams and later on the Ipswich Tigers, in addition to all of the Boston area professional sports teams.

She is survived by three sons, Hugh Francis O’Flynn, Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Ipswich, Mass, William Albert O’Flynn and his wife, Barbara, of The Villages, Fla., and Mark Ward O’Flynn and his wife, Judy, of Ipswich, Mass.; two daughters, Margaret Joyce (O’Flynn) Flynn and her husband, Thomas, of Fairfield, Conn., and Kathleen Louise (O’Flynn) Lyons and her husband, Malcolm, of Manchester, Maine; a nephew, Dr. Frederick A. Meier, Jr. of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 16 grandchildren, Thomas, Kevin, and Paul Flynn and Virginia Flynn McAuliffe, Hugh, Michael, Gardner, and Jonathan O’Flynn, Kristine Lyons Baez, and Jeffrey and Matthew Lyons, Cara O’Flynn Bell and Alison O’Flynn Busca, and Caitlin, Mark and Daniel O’Flynn; as well as 23 great-grandchildren. She was sister of the late Albert C. Joyce, Jr., Virginia C. Joyce, and Louise M. (Joyce) Meier.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Morris Funeral Home, 45 North Main Street, Ipswich. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Parish, 54 Linebrook Road, Ipswich. There will also be a funeral Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, 699 Stevens Avenue, Portland, ME, on Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m., followed by internment in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland.
